This hard drive is great. Fast 7200rpm speed and large storage. Good bang for the buck!

By Mr. Anderson (Northern Virginia)
While I didn't purchase these drives from Amazon, I thought I would pass along my experience in the event it helps others make an informed decision. Our company recently performed a tech refresh on a little under 1000 computers. About half of the new computers have this Western Digital hard drive, the other half have a Seagate Barracuda 160 GB SATA drive. Within a month of the new computers being deployed, we are getting an average of 3 failed hard drives a week - all are the Western Digital 160 GB model # WD1600AAJS. The numbers seem too great to be the expected "infant mortality rate" for new hardware one might expect from +/- 500 new computers. All failures are being quickly replaced by the manufacturer since they are under warranty, but the amount of dead hard drives showing up on a regular basis has made me very wary of this model. BTW, no failed Seagate drives have been reported thus far.

I purchased two of these drives for installation in the Linksys NAS 200. The install was easy and the drives are really snappy in the NAS 200. No issues at all.

By T. Thompson
The biggest killer of hard drives is heat. If there is no air flow around the drive, the drive risks certain failure. That said, I have 2 of these running 24/7 in a home-theater PC in a raid-0 array. They are fast and quiet. They have been running continuously for over a year, and no hiccups. 160GB is small by today's standards, but the beauty of this design is that the drive is spinning just one single platter. If you were to go to the 320 GB or larger drive, then you will have multiple platters spinning inside the enclosure, resulting in higher heat and noise.

By Oseph S. Vetrano, Jr. (Wall, NJ)
I had 3 die in the span of one calendar year. As a teacher, all I do is internet, word processing, Powerpoints and download a little music here & there. Yes, the hard drives were replaced by WD under warranty, but I spent $500 in PC repairs & data recovery in 2007. WD sends you a reconditioned hard drive and not a new one. I will never buy WD again and their QC department should be ashamed of themselves. I recommend Seagate.

While the previous review of this product is reasonable and well written, it promotes a common misconception about USB drives and Macs: that the drive is at fault for the USB port's performance. This simply isn't true. I own two Macs as well as a PC laptop. I can tell you from experience that pre-2008 Macs have underpowered ports, which is why USB storage devices perform so disappointingly. Thumb drives, portable drives, AC-powered drives -- all disappear from the desktop without warning unless a USB Y extension cable is used. Most USB drive manufacturers don't include such an accessory, but Apricorn does(!), and I use mine constantly.
Read your OSX manual and you'll discover that Apple warns USB drives cannot be used as boot drives. The company doesn't say that *certain* USB drives can't be used, it says *none* -- zero, zip. Translation: USB drives on a pre-2008 Mac are inherently unreliable. (Post-2008 Macs might be unreliable, too, but if so, that's troublesome, because some no longer offer firewire ports.) If you want a speedy backup drive for a 2007 mac, you'll be forced to choose a *firewire* drive exclusively. The Bio doesn't offer a firewire option, but other Aegis portables do. If you want a reliable boot drive, get one of those and spend the extra $20.
If, however, you want extra security and are willing to settle for OK performance due to the great deals on the Bio that have sprung up lately, then buy the Bio and use the included USB Y extension cable.
Aegis is a thoughtful and reliable company; their drives are easier, more convenient and better implemented than any other portable drives I've used. This particular drive has a 16-point omni-directional shock mounting system to keep the disc (as well as your data) safe. Almost all Aegis portables use a built-in USB cable that tucks into the side of the case, which is extremely convenient -- I've yet to experience any problems with the built-in cables and I've been carrying my Aegis drives around for the past four years.
The fingerprint ID feature is nicely implemented and easy to use, but, truthfully, the sturdy-yet-dinky case and discounted price are the reasons to pick this up.
If you use the drive with Windows, you'll find that apps like Explorer can use your finger-scan to fill in user names and passwords. Up to ten different fingertips (and therefore people) can access the drive and maintain their own sets of passwords. The feature is quite fun, but it can only store single password sets for each fingertip. This means you can't maintain different settings for different situations unless you happen to carry around someone else's finger (in which case, please don't contact me!). If, for example, you want one group of logins for home and one for work, you'll find that's impossible.
Outside of Amazon and Newegg (which still has a number of five-star reviews), every extensive review on this product has been glowing. Now that I own and love this critter, add my review to the five-star list!

By Paul Christensen (West Chester, PA United States)
Based on early reviews, I bought the Aegis Bio to protect my sensitive work files. The Aegis Bio is 128-bit hardware-encrypted - even if the drive is removed from the case it can't be read. The drive itself is well-designed, compact, lightweight. A single USB cable is attached and provides both power and signal to the drive (unlike some other drives that require separate cables for power and signal). In a nice design touch, the cable stores in a slot on the side of the case. In another nice move, Apricorn includes a thin neoprene sleeve case that offers some protection.
On Windows, performance is good but not as fast as an unencrypted USB 2.0 drive. On my Core 2 Duo / USB 2.0 configuration (Windows XP) I can write to the Aegis Bio at around 19MB/sec.
On Mac OS X, unfortunately, the drive is not recognized as a USB 2.0 device so performance is unusable for anything but small files. On both my PowerMac G5 and MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo running OS X 10.4.10, the drive is only recognized as a USB 1.1 device, regardless of what USB port I use (on the machine or through a USB 2.0 hub). This is apparently a common issue with Apple's OS X USB drivers. But on the same MacBook Pro, booted under Windows XP with Apple's BootCamp, using the same USB port, the drive is recognized at full USB 2.0 speed.
Aegis advertises this as a Windows and Mac device, although they clearly state that you must have access to a Windows machine to setup the drive, and register or change fingerprints. Also on Windows (but not Mac OS X), Apricorn provides software that lets you use the fingerprint reader to authenticate and auto-fill passwords in Web pages and system prompts.
One limitation that Apricorn doesn't clearly state is that the drive can only be formatted FAT32 and only using the Apricorn Aegis Formatter utility. If you try to use the built-in OS formatting utilities on Windows (or Mac) you will be unable to mount the drive on any other computer - apparently a side-effect of their hardware encryption. Apricorn doesn't provide a download for the formatter - it is only included on the install CD, so keep a copy handy if you need it. Although FAT32 provides the "lowest common denominator" for read/write across platforms without additional software, individual files cannot be greater than 2GB on the Aegis Bio.
Based on the Windows-only (and limiting) formatter, Windows-only drive activation and registration software, and slow USB 1.1-speeds under MacOS X, I cannot recommend this drive for Mac users, hence the 3-star review. If you're only on Windows, you'll probably be happy with this drive as long as you don't have to store files larger than 2GB (if so, you're out of luck).
For Mac users, it looks like the best choice might be the LaCie Safe Mobile USB 2.0 drive with encryption. LaCie provides both Mac and PC software and fingerprint registration, lets you format the drive using standard formatting utilties, and from other reviews this drive is recognized by OS X at full USB 2.0 speeds.

I have a Macbook with a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo drive and 2 GB of 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running OS X Leopard. I bought this drive about three hours ago. I brought it home, unpacked it, and started it up according to the instructions included in the box. Nothing happened. It will not mount to my desktop. My computer won't recognize it at all so disk utilities has been no help. I searched the Western Digital support website for help and found nothing useful, so I called customer service. After about 20 minutes on the phone and countless tests, I was told to return the drive to the store from which I purchased it. I would not recommend this drive to anyone.

Bought three of these and threw them into a hotswap backplane with another 500 i had laying around. Set them up in a Raid 5 with 1 hot spare.
I'm not sure if i am realizing the energy saving benefits of the variable RPM's on this drive. My raid controller may not be letting them spin down while idle. Hard to tell. Either way if your dealing with minimal amounts of power in my opinion. Unless your dealing with a data center or your a complete green freak your really not saving alot of watts with these drives. You would be better off spending your money on a energy efficient PSU.
5 year warranty, good cache size, nothing to complain about.
Western Digital has good rma and service. Their advanced RMA lets you get a working drive while they examine your old one.

The setup took some time. But works as described.
The biggest PROBLEM is the WebAccess GUI (graphical user interface). Very poorly designed and extremely slow. When doing "preview" of a photo which is about 3 megabytes it takes good 5 to 7 seconds to show the picture. Once you have one picture up in the preview mode you can click next (if you have more then one photo) and that also takes 5 to 7 seconds to show up.
Thumbnail preview is not available either so you end up looking at file names like (DSC_0041.jpg).
It has "MultiMedia" feature which I have not tried yet. May be that will give me thumbnail pic of a file.
The NAS itself has a web-based administration which you can access if your pc is on same subnet (private) as your pc, but I could not access it from outside (public)using WebAccess.
Tried calling support because I had few questions. Automated system told me that technicians were busy and its better to send an email. Since I wanted to talk to a live rep. to see if they know the product ended up waiting on the phone. For an hour no one picked up so I listened to music on hold "Mozart" which put me to sleep. No joke.
One more thing to add to poorly written Webaccess GUI. Once you login to see your files you can't logout because there is no button to do so. You have to close the browser to be logged out.

By Michael S. Urvan (Marietta, GA USA)
It's awesome - small, fast, quiet, can be configured as a 250 gig RAID, has gigabit support, has Mac support, auto power-down green mode. Killer for dumping your data to. If you have the money, they offer a 1TB version also. I didn't install the software (but I hear the sofware is decent).
The unit is silent, even when copying files onto it. It's smaller than I expected (a little larger than two iPhones stacked), you can easily carry it with you if needed. The options on this unit are great, especially that it is two 250 gig drives that can be configured in RAID. The unit comes configured as one 500 gig storage, but using the web interface it's easy to reconfigure for a 250 gig RAID failsafe config. The unit allows you to create any number of shared shared folders, and make them individually public read-only, public read-write, or assign users to the individual shared folders for security. It has user management, where you create any number of login names/passwords and assign permissions to each user to allow for read-only or read-write permissions, and which shared folders they have access to.
In this price range you can't find a reliable NAS product that is silent, with two hard drives, gigabit networking, user security, and all these other features. There are some cheaper products, and they have bad reviews.

Easy to install and works well. There is no fan so it is quiet.

By Gaz Rendar (Chicago, IL USA)
The LinkStation Mini from Buffalo is a fully loaded network attached storage device (NAS) with a slew of great features and options. The only downside is you pay more per GB than you would for similar units, but for home use the extra cash you spend is worth it.
HARDWARE
The LinkStation Mini comes with a slim ethernet cable and power supply. The brick of the power supply has one of the smaller footprints I've seen for an AC plug. They both fit well with the mini theme of the device.
The LinkStation unit itself is unbelievably small. There are two laptop-sized hard drives in the black enclosure. The case is vented on multiple sides, has an ethernet jack, USB jack, power supply jack, and an On-Off-Auto switch on the back with a couple small LED lights on the front. The sleek black shell with blue LED design allows you to put it in your living room, office, or bedroom--especially since there is no fan in the unit and therefore virtually zero noise.
INSTALLATION
The LinkStation Mini comes with an install disc for your computer(s). Just pop in the disc, follow the simple directions, and you'll be able to hook up your LinkStation to your router and have your computer(s) be able to drag, drop, and copy files on it with no problem. If this is all you want to do, you will only need basic computer skills for this set up. As a side note, the LinkStation Mini has a USB port on it, but that is not used for a direct USB connection to your computer as you can only read/write the files on the LinkStation through the ethernet cable. The USB port is there to add additional USB storage drives to the LinkStation later.
If you want to use some of the more advanced features, you will need to have an intermediate to advanced level of networking knowledge to set up the LinkStation. If you have a Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) router the set up steps might be easier, but my UPnP router didn't work with the LinkStation. This is most likely because I have a cheap-O, free DSL modem-router combo unit from my internet service provider. I needed to go through and set up my advanced networking features manually. So if you don't know what terms like UPnP, port forwarding, DLNA, FTP, and SSL are, you'll probably have a difficult time setting up all the advanced features without enlisting the help of a computer geek.
USABILITY AND FEATURES
At its core, the LinkStation is a NAS, or networked hard drive. The advantage is that multiple computers in your house can all access the one hard drive instead of moving a USB hard drive from computer to computer. The two laptop-sized hard drives within the single unit can be set to be used as one continuous, 500 GB hard drive, or be set to mirror each other as two 250 GB hard drives that constantly back each other up. You can also set the rear switch to be On all the time, Off all the time, or Automatically turn on when a computer accesses the LAN network. After that basic functionality, you can have the LinkStation do all kinds of neat stuff.
If you have a static IP address you can open up the ports on your LinkStation and set it to act as an FTP. My DSL provider gives me a dynamic IP address, so I can't set that up with any long term success. However, Buffalo has a website that mediates a free peer-to-peer connection with your LinkStation from anywhere in the world as long as you have internet access. You have to open a few ports on your router, but it works very well for reading photos and music files. The website even opens your music files within an Adobe Flash environment complete with mp3 playback, so you can play your music files straight from a webpage on any computer in the world without having to download your files. The peer-to-peer webpage takes a little while to load, but works very well, especially if you group 50 files or less into separate folders.
You can also use the LinkStation as a DLNA server for movies, music, and photos. I'm able to have my Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 find the LinkStation and stream music and videos straight from the disc. Combined with the "remote play" feature using the Playstation 3 and PlayStation Portable (PSP) with my LinkStation Mini and surround sound receiver, I can use my PSP as a remote control with a screen to browse and play my whole music library on my stereo system--all without booting up a computer or using my TV. It's similar to having a Sonos or SqueezeBox player in your house. A very, very cool feature with the LinkStation if you already have the video game consoles.
The software that comes with the install CD gives you an easy desktop icon to click to find your network shared folders on your Mini. It also provides a dedicated way to access the settings for your Mini. In addition, there is a licensed program, Memeo, included to help you schedule file back-ups between your computer and the LinkStation.
PROBLEMS/DOWNSIDES
The only downsides are the price and speed. Since there are two 5400 rpm laptop-sized hard drives in the unit, it's a little slower than larger units (with fans) that have 7200rpm hard drives. But the speed isn't that bad. In a RAID 0 configuration ("one" continuous 500 GB hard drive) I was able to move 500 MB of multiple files to the LinkStation in about 1 minute. For my home needs, this is enough speed. You will also be paying more dollars per GB for the LinkStation Mini compared to other units out there. Therefore, if you are putting it in an office at work, I might opt for a cheaper, faster NAS.
OVERALL
Personally, I think the LinkStation Mini is great and suits my needs perfectly. It's fine for the office/work environment, but perfect for the home because: 1) there is a very low electricity drain so you can leave it on all the time, 2) it doesn't have a fan so it barely makes any noise, 3) plays nice with Vista, XP, and Mac, and 4) you'd be hard pressed to find so many useful NAS features in such a small package. I highly recommend it.

I'm done with LaCie drives. The power bricks are the Achilles heel of Lacie peripherals. I've had 2 hard drives and 2 optical drives at home. The power bricks have all failed within 3 years. At work we have a backup server with 6 Lacie 1TB drives. We have gone through a dozen or two power bricks. Every time one goes bad the drive unmounts or has errors and the server hangs. That is totally unacceptable in a mission critical system. Sometimes the drives get data corruption when the power supplies fail. I would advise everybody to avoid Lacie products like the plague, unless you can find a more reliable power source. Their products look cool but power bricks are low rent. A proper drive has a built in supply and an IEC power cord. Not a cheap power brick. I'm spending the extra money for Glyph drives in places I can't afford frequent failures.

By Speedway Girl (Upstate New York, USA)
Coming from a Mac publishing environment where only Lacie is used, I purchase Lacie at home, too. I have this 500 GB drive, a networked 320 GB drive, and a dual layer Lacie burner. I purchase Lacie because they have a two year warranty on their product, great tech support, and they stand behind their product. These 500 GB drives have a problem with their power supplies, but Lacie will be happy to ship you a new one. Their drives work great with both Macs and PC's. The true measure of a company is not how perfect their product is, but how well they handle things with something goes wrong. Lacie does a wonderful job with their website, customer service, and warranty support. Thanks, Lacie!

By V. Dantonio (Platation, FL)
It is dissapoinying to read many reviews where they speak of whirring or drive dying. This will happen, but Lacie is great about sending a replacement power supply. Works great after receiving the replacement. Otherwise great HD.

By Adam Loving (Seattle, WA USA)
Tried to turn it on this morning, and it make repeated whirring sounds as if it can't spin up. Not a good backup solution, very disappointed.

By K. Smith
It's a stylish drive, but form won out over function.
Within months, this drive cannot be recognized by any PCs. The light comes on and it starts grinding away (very noisily), but that's it. Very dissapointing.

On paper this product is ideal for small businesses that want a low cost solution to backing up multiple gigabytes of data.
As described by other reviewers the installation is not always smooth and is by no means intuitive.
I've setup 4 customers with this solution and it seems to backup fine but beware that restoration can present very serious problems if any part of the disk/tape is corrupted.
At the root of these backup disks is a small index file and if damaged in some way it can COMPLETELY prevent the restoration of your data. Even if the data is clearly visible with the appended IOMEGA file extension (*.iab) you can't restore your data.
Iomega provides a small utility to help address this shortcoming but it doesn't work if compression is enabled in the backup software (but compression is enabled by default in the software!).
They do have an advanced data restoration department presumably to help with these problems but they charge hefty fees.
This is really an unconscionable way to design a backup solution. I would consider another vendor, possibly an online solution.

The cartridges are the same size as a stack of four 720k/1.44mb floppy disks. Works with most tape back up software. There are various models of this drive which include internal vs external and interface type such as USB, SCSI, Firewire, IDE.

We've been using our REV for several years as an accounting system backup device. Simple. Scriptable. Dependable. The only problem was that it rolled over on its back one evening and died. I suppose you can't expect these things to last forever, and ours went a good 3+ years without incident. Now that the price is down in the $260 range, it's a nice little device for nightly backups.

This product worked fine for me for about a year until the power supply failed. This was very inconvenient, and caused my client to have a gap in their data backup. Iomega were good enough to send me a replacement.
After about another year the replacement power supply failed. Another gap in my clients data backup, not to mention a small dent in their confidence in me. This time Iomega were unwilling to replace, and so I had to buy another replacement power supply.
